#24: Enrollment Growth Starts Within

What is Strategic Enrollment Management?
" a comprehensive process designed to help an institution achieve and maintain the optimum recruitment, retention and graduation rates of students, where optimum is defined in the academic context of the institution " (Dolence, 1993).
Getting students through the door is the main function of the admissions office and an important component of enrollment management but is just the beginning. As we continue to see the number of small private universities closing, you will see more attention placed on the front end. Are the plans strategic or reactive? What's missing? I'm here to provide you with content that will challenge and conflict. The latter is where growth comes, if managed correctly. Leaders, you ready?

Enrollment is declining but it’s low everywhere. How many of us hear this on campus as a common answer to when someone does the worst thing they could ever do in a meeting “discuss the numbers”. Yes, enrollment is low, but we have answer…. We are going to be launching new programs. Enrollment is low and launching new programs seem to go hand in hand in higher education as a fix or a portion of the band aid to address the decline of enrollment at many small private and public universities.

Yes, distance learning has been around for 170 years. Sounds crazy right?
The delivery of education has gone through massive changes due to innovation, but it's definitely hit some bumps in the road along the way. As you begin to hear more about the Higher Education Act reform it's important to note "How did we get here?" Distance learning creates access and affordability. It's not going away anytime soon.
